The girl was led to believe that she would be banned from the prison and wouldn't be allowed to see her father if she refused the invasive search. Strip searches often involve close inspection of body cavities, including genitals. Her mother told the Virginian-Pilot:.
Diamond Peerman, the girl's father's girlfriend, accompanied the girl on the visit. Peerman is not a legal guardian and was not legally able to give officers permission to strip search the 8-year-old girl.
The girl's mother says her daughter already has to deal with mental health issues such as bipolar disorder, ADHD, and depression. She cried for a while after learning what a strip search is -- and that she had to get one in order to see her dad.
The girl was told to remove all of her clothes and to bend over and cough while officers looked at her genitals. She was given her clothing back slowly, piece by piece when one of the corrections officers said:.

I mean most adults, certainly most adults who work in the field of child welfare would know better, that this is an act of child abuse. Kinney stated: It is deeply troubling and represents a breach in our protocol. We sincerely apologize to this child and her family and will be taking immediate disciplinary action against the person responsible.
